Hooper House came from a client who had subdivided his land and wanted to build on the empty site. The block was a double axe-head shape steep sand dune facing west into an open plane. Th client wanted a modern Queensland style home that had a large flat area connected to the living space and pool - enough to kick a footy around on'
The object of the house was to meet the brief and maximize the use of the site to facilitate it. The exposure to the western sun was a primary concern and the footprint of the home was designed along the summer suns path. This orientation also allowed for maximum winter sun penetration and we could take full advantage of thermal massing to soak up the warm of the sun in the winter months.
A disadvantage of this orientation meant that the upstairs bedrooms had very little view- this was navigated by giving each room a triangular just out with a full length window, framing the view to the national park
The Master bedroom was given precedence with a private deck offering a vast view from the bed or freestanding bath to the west stretching over the alluvial plan to Lake Weyba and Mt Ninderry.
The house sits above the busy David Low Way - so to allow for privacy and noise reduction a solid wood balustrade was placed to block out these issues. The area in front of the pool however was made of glass-so the view could still be seen when at water level
