TALLOWWOOD

Rural Home

Maleny.  QLD

[2019]

At the initial meeting the client expressed their desire to have a building as high as possible which captured the key views in the estate to the surrounding farms. The large, bulky neighbourhood estate homes meant that the views were hemmed and strategic  sight lines had to be identified. The privacy of the home was also a consideration and challenge with floor to ceiling windows.

The form of the building was 2 intersecting rectangles with a protective industrial cladding. These boxes are sliced on a corner to reveal the warm timber within. the Upper level is positioned to utilise the northern aspect, and the guest bedroom section faces down to the field and dams in the valley. the two forms interact at the entry of the home which funnels arriving visitors inside.

At night the garage becomes a light-box, making the upper level appear to float
